A schedule reference and a supplier bill answer different questions. The E0260 lookup identifies a reviewed fee reference for one code, service date and CMS area. It does not know whether your order is covered, how much deductible remains, whether the supplier accepts assignment or what another insurer pays.
Start with the item, not the total
Ask the supplier to identify the billed code, service date and rental month. If the bill includes more than one item, ask for separate lines. Do not compare a combined invoice total with the lookup's single E0260 amount. This is an editorial checking suggestion, not a Medicare billing requirement.
Separate the reference from your share
For covered Original Medicare Part B hospital beds, Medicare.gov describes the usual share as 20% of the approved amount after the deductible, if the supplier accepts assignment. [S1] Multiplying a lookup result by 20% does not establish what you owe: the tool has not checked those conditions or other insurance.
Ask: “Which amount is the approved amount, which part is my deductible, and which part is coinsurance?” If the invoice includes optional items or services, ask which charges belong to those lines. Do not assume an unexplained difference is either a billing error or a legitimate extra charge.
Check assignment before interpreting a difference
Ask whether assignment applies to the item and all rental months. Medicare.gov advises checking this for rented equipment. [S1] Use the assignment guide for the distinction between enrollment and assignment; do not infer either from a schedule amount.
Bring a short comparison to the supplier
| Question | What to request |
|---|---|
| Are we comparing the same item? | Item description and billed code |
| Are we comparing the same period? | Service date and rental month |
| What does the quoted total include? | Separate charge lines and assumptions |
| What share is assigned to me? | Deductible, coinsurance and other-insurance explanation |
| What still needs confirmation? | Claim or estimate status and a contact for questions |
Keep your invoice and identifiers private. DMEAtlas does not collect them. For Medicare Advantage, ask your plan about coverage, network requirements and costs. The lookup does not check your plan. [S3]
