Ask about enrollment, assignment and rental months before agreeing to delivery.

Before ordering a hospital bed, ask the supplier two separate questions: “Are you enrolled in Medicare?” and “Will you accept assignment for this item, including each rental month?” A yes to the first question does not answer the second. Medicare.gov asks people obtaining hospital beds to check both. [S1]

A participating supplier must accept assignment. A non-participating supplier may choose to accept it for your case. [S1] Ask for the answer that applies to your item rather than relying on enrollment alone.

What the answer changes

Assignment means accepting the Medicare-approved amount as full payment for a covered service. It does not mean the patient pays nothing. When assignment applies, deductible and coinsurance may still be owed. The supplier must submit the claim directly and cannot charge a claim-submission fee. [S2]

For Original Medicare Part B hospital beds, Medicare.gov describes the usual patient share as 20% of the approved amount after the deductible, if the supplier accepts assignment. [S1] That statement is not a quote for your order. Coverage, remaining deductible and other insurance still need checking.

Ask about every rental month

For rented equipment, Medicare.gov specifically advises confirming assignment for all rental months. If the supplier will not accept assignment for all rental months, Medicare.gov says you may have to pay the full cost upfront. Medicare then pays you the amount it covers after the claims have been submitted and processed. [S1] This does not promise reimbursement of the entire amount you paid. Before delivery, ask for a written answer covering the item and the expected rental arrangement. Do not infer the answer from a Medicare logo or from the supplier's enrollment alone.

What to write down

This is a conversation record to keep privately. DMEAtlas does not collect patient identifiers or medical records. For Medicare Advantage, ask the plan about its supplier network, authorization and costs.

Where the fee lookup fits

The E0260 lookup shows reviewed schedule references by service date and CMS fee area. It cannot verify assignment, remaining deductible, coverage or a personal bill. Use the fee explanation to understand the number; use the supplier's written estimate to understand the proposed charges.
